Kim Kardashian and the rest of the Kardashian/Jenner spectacle are known for being famous with no talent, but we all can learn something from them. Well actually, the ringleader or mom-manager is the one we can learn from. Turn their over-the –top antics into an employment work plan for real people.

Real people advice: The real life take is getting your name noticed by people who do hiring. This includes learning to network and using social media such as Linked-in, Facebook and Twitter. A good resume will help you to become aligned with strong people that can lead to job openings.

    Be ready for attention. Kim always looks as if she is the center of attention, even when people do not know why she is there. She is not afraid to show off assets and improve other aspects of her person including a little Photoshop. Kim, Kourtney and Khloe keep their clothes, makeup and hair on- point. Real people advice: Look your best and put together; you never know when that person you meet will offer you a job. Keep a good amount of trendy but professional clothing. You can use a few accessories or two but nothing over the top.

    everything to stay on people's lips. They will do anything to maintain their spot in the spotlight including: be a drama/attention whore, let people get sick of you and then go for more. Real people advice: Remember to maintain a good profile that people will consider you worthy of mentioning. Do some charity work or attend events. Obtain good chit-chat and conversation skills that are more than business related. Try to be well-rounded person and show- up to parties, make a memorable appearance then leave.

Legal and Quick Ways to Make Money

I have written pieces on how to make money in non-traditional and common ways. Discussing jobs like merchandising, product demonstrators and working for the government positions.
                                   
If you need to make money fast for a bill or something, then look at these items below.  You may need a PayPal account or get direct deposit into your bank account. Good Luck!

  • Sell something. Make sure it is something that somebody else wants. Price it for quick sales. Places like Amazon, Craigslist, Ebay are great places to sell just about anything.

Welcome to the Game of Work: How to Play (2nd in Series)

I like to compare rules of social institutions to board games. It helps me to remember that I must play by their rules to succeed on their grounds, do well for myself while ensnared in their trap. This is the basis for my new pieces on the work game.

My first post on this series was the players in the game of work. You can find that here. This post is about how to play the game. To play a game to win you must be clear on your objective and it is not the same for everyone. Below are some examples of work goals that influence how you play the work game.

  • To make money $ - find position with good payment system; salary position
  • To be challenged- find fulfilling work
  • Find better position – find a job then transfer to a better position and department
  • Benefits- find jobs with good health care, discounts, sick days, etc
  • Free or reduced college education – find a job that pays for education of employees

The Work Game: Players

This is the first post in a series that I call ‘The Work Game’. I will compare corporate employment to a board game, but on a sociological level. Please enjoy.


A game need players and this one is no exception. The difference is that not all players are equal in pay, influence or respect. The players of the game are: you, co-workers, your boss, boss man (or woman). To set-up our game, we will describe the players. I am purposefully omitting you, because most people can figure out where they fit.
Co-workers
  • Work in your department or their job is connected to yours. An example: At McDonalds. The cooks in the back affect the job of the cash register when customers do not receive their food. They become impatient and sometimes mean to the cashier.

Influencers
  • Do not work in your department, but comments made (good or bad) alter the way your boss or boss man treats you.
  • Many times these are the nosy people that should mind their own business

Your boss
  • Tells you what to do
  • Oversees time-off requests, evaluations and raises
  • Might not have any real power except over you (Be careful a power trip may ensue and they could be intimidated by you)

Boss man (or woman)
  • Possess real authority, 'person to impress'
  • Gets things done
  • Often very, busy (not a paper shuffler)

Mending Fences or What To Do After You Quit Your Job

There are times when after staying at a job you hate; you can not take any more and quit. It would be nice to write a letter of resignation, but sometimes that does not happen. Giving the Personnel Department a letter a week in advance looks better than nothing. There are steps that can be done when you quit without giving notice.

A To Do List After Quitting Your Job
  • Better Late Than Never. If you have already quit (not coming in) then go ahead and send a  resignation letter to the company anyway. Use a believable good reason for leaving not that the supervisor is stupid or the job is meaningless. This step is good for large companies, because the Human Resources department is behind on status anyway.
  • Good Reasons. Credible reasons for quitting a job, looks good when asking why you left work. Examples of statements: Health (can mean mental, physical whatever), Family Obligations (kids, daycare problems, baby mama drama), education Obligations (school, training, etc), Responsibilities Conflict (this can be used at your discretion; most people will not ask what the conflict was about).
  • Fake it. Be nice about leaving, even if you hate the job. It looks a lot better when you leave sweet better than sour.

Working and Medical Conditions

Finding a way to work while having an illness can be difficult. The worker needs to change the way they think about work. In this article, I discuss in detail how to work with a chronic but not disabling condition. This post will have the short version.


Know Your Limits
  • Admit what can be done with and with out help
  • Will pain or other medicine make you more productive?
  • Can you do more if seated or with frequent breaks?
View Possibilities
  • Ditch the 9 to 5 work route
  • Consider part-time or consultant work
  • Think temporary or seasonal work

7 Ways to Improve Your Resume

  1. Make it custom. Create a special resume for each different position to improve your resume.  List characteristics the employer is looking for. Be creative, but don’t lie. A detailed description of how to customize a resume will be soon.
     Ex: For a childcare position: Watched neighbors kids = performed private childcare

  1. Read the past. Look at past reviews from previous employers and use the positive remarks on your improved resume. A second place to find the right words is to look at the responsibilities paper from prior job titles.
  1. List everything. Write down all job duties including those that ‘technically’ were not your job to improve your resume. Include duties not done everyday.
     Ex: Train the new employee = trained new employees
     Ex: Looked at new employee progress = supervised employees

  1. Use action verbs. Switch out ordinary words with professional words to improve your resume. Pick up a Thesaurus (a book of synonyms and antonyms) at the Dollar Tree, Walmart or thrift store. Another option when using a computer is to select the word and right-click, then hover over synonyms.
Ex: answered phones = operated multi-line switchboard.  Word List

  1. Check spelling. Try the SpellCheck feature when using a word processing program, but look for autocorrect mistakes. Autocorrect is when the computer corrects a word that you want spelled in a different way.
    6.   Keep it fresh and short. Always have an updated resume; it only takes a few  minutes to add a new job. Most resumes should be only a page long.

    ob specific examples: Knows web-based programs, experienced with computer   machinery. General skill examples: multi-tasking skills, quick learner, works efficiently.
